Bayside Furniture: Natural teak beauties

25 May 2021

The timber furniture was the last word in contemporary European design – clean lines, clever handcrafted details and immaculate construction. And all of it was in solid teak.

“It was very radical at the time,” recalls George Arandjelovic. “I’d never seen anything like it in Australia, so I decided to give it a go and established Bayside Furniture.”

In September, the Geelong-based company will celebrate its 10th anniversary and demand from architects, interior designers and quality retailers shows no signs of abating.

Designers of Bayside’s offerings include renowned Belgians, Axel Enthoven and Louis de Limburg Stirum, and every piece is in natural, untreated teak – some 60 per cent of it reclaimed from old buildings and the rest from sustainable plantations in Java.

“No stains or varnishes are used,” notes George. “That’s environmentally responsible and besides, the natural oils in teak provide ample protection. It’s a rich, warm timber that weathers to an equally beautiful tone.”

A new outdoor range to be launched at Furnitex should be perfect for observing the gradual transformation. Its designers are passionate about teak: George Arandjelovic and his brother and business partner, Milovan.
