Clarecraft Jarrah: Star of the West

12 July 2021

Clarecraft JarrahOccupying pride of place at Clarecraft Jarrah’s stand at Furnitex will be Esperance, the fabulous suite that took top honours for bedroom furniture at the 2009 Australian Furniture of the Year Awards.

It risks being overshadowed by the four new bedroom suites that will be displayed by the prestigious Perth company founded in 1974 by Bill and Carmel Clare.

“One combines jarrah and marri, and the others are made entirely from marri – a blond timber with striking gum markings, that’s native only to Western Australia,” says son John Clare who now runs Clarecraft. “Marri isn’t easy to work with, but it’s in very high demand because of its beauty and exoticism.”

Adding further value is the blend of superb traditional craftsmanship and state of the art technology that has made Clarecraft Jarrah an international favourite with connoisseurs of fine furniture – these days, predominantly for the bedroom and strongly European in influence.

“We occupy a niche that’s especially attractive to builders and architects, though we do a variety of contract work,” says John. “A church was a recent client. We made the pews.”
