“Individual design” are not just buzz words at Colby Furniture. Some 80 per cent of the lounge, dining and bedroom pieces created at the multi-award-winning Melbourne furniture company are custom-made.

‘That reflects a strong preference for individuality in Australia,” notes Colby’s founder, Maria McLeod. “It also demands highest quality workmanship and nothing leaves us without satisfying the most stringent standards.”

Founded in 1986, Colby has become a favourite with architects and interior decorators nationwide as well as in countries ranging from Britain to Singapore, thanks to its expertise in classical and modern furniture.

In 2007, the firm took the coveted Manufacturer of the Year award at Furnitex and while Colby’s offerings for the July 2009 fair remain under wraps, there are some hints from Maria.

“The nesting instinct always surfaces during tough economic times. Consumers want comfort and turn to tradition, so the revival in classicism is not surprising. There’s also been a resurgence in environmental consciousness, so natural fibres are in – and of course the new season trends.

“People forget furniture is fashion, but we certainly don’t. The new colours? Black and hot pink are big.”
