Collessione Chesterfield: Quilted Mastery

23 April 2021

Historians remain divided about the origins of the Chesterfield sofa, though most agree the buttoned, quilted leather classic first emerged in 18th century England.

It has remained the epitome of refined traditionalism. And few do the Chesterfield greater justice than Portuguese-born Melbourne master craftsman Ramiro Coelho.

“He’s been in the furniture industry since he was 13 and in those early years he was already working on prototypes for designers,” says Ramiro’s business partner Ros Termine at Collessione Chesterfield’s base in Thomastown.

“Every piece made by Ramiro and his team is handcrafted in-house from the finest leathers – all tanned in Italy – and Victorian Ash, which is used for the hardwood frames.”

Contemporary ranges are also produced by the firm, but its emphasis is firmly on Chesterfield-style furniture for lounge, bedroom and office. It ranges from full suites to individual pieces including chaise longues, recliners, ottomans and executive chairs fit for the CEO.
