Design Furniture: Adelaide class act

1 June 2021

For her contemporary setting, Lisa Magnera has chosen an elegant palette of charcoal, navy, black and white, highlighted with splashes of Chinese red. For contrast, the classical setting, complete with a Louis XIV chair, will ooze opulence.

It comes as no surprise that Design Furniture’s designer has already planned the Adelaide company’s stand for Furnitex. Like husband and co-owner Sandro, she is a stickler for detail – essential with projects that run the gamut from elite hotels, restaurants and residential developments, to cinema complexes.

“Design Furniture had already been established for 20 years when we took over from previous owners Fred and Carol Schmidt in 2005,” says Lisa. “It had a very good reputation, but was struggling because rival retailers were prepared to cut corners.

“We decided to concentrate on quality and wholesale to architects, interior designers and other specifiers. Sandro’s brother Angelo and his wife joined us in the business a year after we started. It’s been hard, but satisfying work.”

A protege of renowned Adelaide interior designer Wendy Wauchope – “I trained with her for five years” – Lisa is supported by an expert team that includes in-house upholsterers and polishers.

“We use only sustainable plantation timbers, especially oak and beech,” she notes. “We’re acutely conscious of environmental impact.”
