Jamel: Perth giant with soul

25 May 2021

“When you touch fine timber furniture, it feels like silk.” The lyrical words come from Carmelo “Mel” Princiotto and the emotion behind them is real.

At 40, the founder and head designer of Perth furniture giant, Jamel, has lost none of his passion for the craft that has dominated his life since age 15 when he began an apprenticeship in cabinet-making.

Seven years later, he founded the company that now sells nationwide, has a staff of 60 – wife Juliana and sons Carmelo Jr and Alexander included – and exports to Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Marra and jarrah are the Western Australian eucalypts used for Jamel’s ranges – strikingly elegant settings and pieces that celebrate the beauty of the native timbers and the designer’s Italian heritage.

“I’ve loved timber since I sketched my first design at 18 and it’s not just about making furniture,” says Mel. “It’s about listening to what people want and creating something that makes them go: Wow!”

They should need little prompting at Furnitex. “I’ll be showing lots of curves and squares as well as – quite unusual – combinations of both,'” reveals Mel Princiotto.
