Moran: Top drawer lounging

14 July 2021

The Knowle is a traditional three-seater day bed handcrafted from kiln-dried Tasmanian Oak and Victoria Ash, and boasting luxury features from premium leather upholstery to an adjustable foot and leg rest.

“It’s a classic beauty; just fabulous,” says Thomas Jacobson, national sales and marketing manager of the Melbourne-based lounge specialist that will present its latest enticements, including the Knowle, at Furnitex.

Founded more than more than 50 years ago by the late John Moran, the company’s reputation for top drawer furniture rapidly gained momentum as word spread of the marvels being created by the upholsterer who began his business in a garage borrowed from a friend.

Today, Moran is an international force with state of the art manufacturing plants in Melbourne and Shanghai, though skilled handcraftsmanship remains its core strength.

And while Moran collections now sell in key Asian cities as well as throughout Australia, its customer profile – “the exceptionally aspirational” – has also remained constant.

It’s a niche that spans elite private homes and five-star Asian hotels, plus Macau’s glittering casinos, and Moran’s latest offerings are right on target.

Those who prefer fabric to leather – most of the latter supplied by New Zealand’s Tasman Tanning – are likely to make a beeline for Moran’s new Louis chair and ottoman. Pure silk upholstery, of course.
