Rex Heathcote – Designer Extraordinaire

26 March 2021

Rex HeathcoteRex Heathcote had a sketchbook full of potential designs and an important exhibition of Tasmanian contemporary furniture was looming. The challenge was irresistible.

So began Extraordinary Furniture, the showpiece category introduced at Rex Heathcote Furniture at the end of 2006 and now a key attraction at the Launceston company that has an international clientele.

In July, the latest showpiece will be unveiled at Furnitex along with a competitively-priced dining and entertainment range from the firm that normally serves the top-end market. As always, design is by Rex, with the assistance of his 11-strong team.

“It includes four apprentices and the special pieces test their skills and provide creative challenges,” says the Tasmanian whose greatest delight as a youngster was soaking up the atmosphere at his family’s upholstery business. He went on to train at the London College of Furniture and in 1986, established his own company.

Sold through quality stores and galleries, Rex Heathcote’s furniture is prized for its fine craftsmanship, innovative blending of the contemporary and traditional, and exquisite veneers in Tasmanian timbers including blackwood, myrtle, huon and oak.
